Product Description

The Catena Zapata Malbec Argentino 2008 shows a saturated dark violet color; the nose offers cassis, mocha and clove, along with a strong suggestion of soil tones. It combines density and sweetness on the one hand, with gripping, lightly saline flavors of tobacco, dark berries, spices and minerals; a palate-staining finish dominated by sweet black and blue fruits.

Drizly Expert Notes

Nicolas Catena Zapata is a world-famous winemaker out of Mendoza, Argentina whose family and wines are steeped in a long history of experimentation. Nicolas' grandfather hailed from Italy to start a new life for his family and was famously known for his daily routine of eating a raw steak for breakfast, unarguably the most perfect pairing for a Mendoza Malbec. Traditions were passed down but it was his grandson, Nicolas who travelled to California and was in turn inspired by what was happening in Napa, especially regarding treatment of the wine based on soil differences, altitudes, and oak treatment.

Catena Zapata brought back his knowledge to the Andean Foothills and began to expand his vineyards sites upward to 5,000 feet to his now-famous Adrianna and Nicasia Vineyards. This area is rich in well-drained soil and beautiful limestone that gives this Malbec its steely but elegant character. Nicolas' inspiration from the French also led to his terroir-driven style that lends to this wine's earthy, rustic, leather, and hay notes. His aging techniques in French oak lead to a chocolate and anise character that renders this wine subtle yet powerful.

This Malbec is from a line of wines dedicated to Catena Zapata that exemplify the family's belief in Argentinian Malbec and how the hand of its maker can produce a wine with finesse and strength at the same time. This wine is not for the faint of food and would be perfect with a steak dinner, game meat, and loaded potatoes.
