All about viognier

What is viognier wine?

Viognier is an aromatic white grape variety that gives this wine its name. The grapes have their origins in southern France, but now California, Virginia, South Africa, New Zealand and Australia are top producers too. It's a full-bodied white wine with a floral scent. Viogner grapes are the only grape used in Condrieu and are traditionally grown in the Rhône valley wine region in southern France.

Winemakers often blend viogner grapes with marsanne, roussanne, rolle, and grenache blanc in the Northern Rhône and chardonnay in the Côte-Rôtie AOC. They can also be blended with red grapes to make red wine blends.

Flavor profile of Viognier wine

Viognier white wine is bursting with perfumed aromas of peach, apricot, tangerine and honeysuckle in its purest form. Viognier is oak-aged at times with hints of vanilla, adding a rich and creamy flavor. Some brands feature spices such as nutmeg and clove that infuse more depth and complexity to the flavor. On the palate, this wine tastes dry with an oily sensation, which is a hallmark of viognier. The drier varieties of this wine have fewer fruity notes with a hint of bitterness. Organic vineyards produce wonderful organic Viognier, ranging in flavor from light and refreshing to bold and creamy.

Foods that pair well with viognier

When pairing food with this fruity white wine, it's important to not have foods that will overpower the delicate floral flavor and wonderful aromas of the wine. South-Asian curries that are mildly spicy and creamy such as a coconut chicken curry pair well with viognier. Meat, poultry or seafood cooked with apricots and or peaches complement the fruity notes of this exotic wine.

Choosing a viognier

When buying a viognier, it's important to keep in mind a few important aspects. The alcohol by volume (ABV) of viognier ranges between 13.5% and 15%. If you prefer a light and spritzy wine, opt for viognier with an ABV of 14% or less. For a fruitier punch with a bold flavor, go for a bottle with a higher alcohol content.
