      All about vernaccia

      What is vernaccia wine?

Dry on the mouth, vernaccia wine has possible Greek origins. Brewed in the Tuscan regions, this wine has a faint yellow hue. Citrusy notes of raw pear, lemon and apple dominate its flavor. There is also a hint of nutty almond aroma. Crisp to taste, vernaccia white wine has a noticeable sharpness that comes with a fruity punch. With an alcohol level that touches 13.5%, the wine pairs well with white sauces and soups, pasta, fried anchovy, eggs and meats. Fiery dishes reveal its herbal aromas. You should serve it chilled and can also consume it as an aperitif.

      The vernaccia family

The grapes occur in three varieties: riserva, selezione and annata. While riservas produces wines that are heavy and rounded, selezione has an intense grape scent. Both these grapes lend a mild spiciness to their wines. Annata is perhaps the most widely fermented white wine grape in the region. Its wines are slightly floral. It does not undergo aging in oak barrels. In the cellars, this Italian white wine can mature from one to three years. The terroir of the wine gives it its characteristic mineral taste.

      Vernaccia characteristics

The Tuscan region is highly calcareous with sea minerals and relics, shells of ancient sea creatures and dirt. All these factors contribute to making the Tuscany white wine mineral-rich and bitter. This wine grape is a high yielding variety. However, about 300 years ago, the popularity of the grape somewhat waned. As a consequence, some of the best varieties are present in rare backyard cultivation. Traditionally harvested in autumn months, climactic changes now necessitate an early harvest around September. The steady salinity of the white wine may be due to a combination of the right sun and soil. It has a light-bodied feel on the mouth and comes with a crisp, tart finish.
