Covered in umlauts, seemingly unpronounceable words and regions you aren't so sure exist, German white wine can seem intimidating, at least from the bottle. However, once you uncork the magic of these white wines, you're immersed in flavors you won't find anywhere else. With 13 distinct wine regions throughout the country, Germany produces 17 different white wines, making up roughly two-thirds of the overall wine market, yet just four wines are widely available outside the country.
Riesling is the most popular of the German white wines, and it's most well-known wine export, accounting for 23 percent of all white wines produced in the country. Traditionally, Riesling has been a sweet, almost dessert-type wine, but new tastes have sprouted semi-sweet and dry varieties. The Mosel and Rheingau regions have the most famous Rieslings produced.
Muller-Thurgau is the second-most popular white wine in Germany, made as a cross between Riesling and Madeleine Royale grapes. Like Riesling, Muller-Thurgau can range from sweet to dry, but is more full-bodied. Most brands have a floral scent, but aren't as appreciated as Riesling, giving you the chance to be the first among your friends to discover it.
Pinot gris isn't exclusive to Germany, but it might taste just a bit better from here. Also known as Grauburgunder, this fruity, light-bodied concoction is perfect for a summer day out on the deck or patio.
