This white grape from Spain is primarily used for producing brandy. Highly resistant to drought, it’s one of the world’s most-planted grapes, but is almost exclusively grown in Spain and is most abundant in the Valdepenas and La Mancha regions.
An airen brandy goes well with seafood like garlic prawns and grilled sardines and pairs nicely with a Chinese broccoli soup. Avoid serving with game birds or red meat.
Airén is a dry wine with a medium-light body and low acidity. Other similar tasting wines include macabeo, albillo, and tempranillo.
Phonetically, this wine grape is pronounced like i-RHEEN.
