    All about specialty wine

What makes it a specialty wine?

We know all wines are special, and we certainly don’t want to play favorites. Some wines are hard to classify, though. Maybe they have special ingredients or cocktail applications; maybe they aren’t even made with grapes. These iconoclasts fall into our umbrella category of “Specialty Wine”. They can be straightforward or strange, high-brow or low-brow, but special times often all for specialty wines.

What types of specialty wines are there?

The specialty wine category helps us incorporate wines that fall outside your standard fermented grapes. That usually means additional flavorings, ingredients, or even different packaging. This is where you’ll find the big box of sweet, fruity Sangria that you’ll need for your next party – red or white. Then you’ll find wines with flavors you might not have considered. There’s watermelon, blueberry pineapple, peach, plum and more. You can even channel your inner Viking with a floral, heady mead (fermented honey). You’ll find delicate bottles of fine plum wine and party-sized boxes of sweet Moscato Sangria. Browse through this section with an open mind and we think you’ll find something you haven’t had but might be up your alley.

When do I try a specialty wine?

Different specialty wines serve different functions. Sangria is a proper party punch. Plum wine is a great aperitif to get you ready for dinner. Mead pairs with the outdoors; raise a toast after climbing a mountain or pass it around the campfire. Drink your blueberry or strawberry wine with your pie. A low alcohol pineapple wine or canned wine cooler is as comfortable on the beach as those seagulls that are ALWAYS trying to steal your snacks. These are loose rules, of course. Feel free to judge where they fit in best for you and your friends.

Hopefully we’ve piqued your interest in trying something you haven’t before. There’s so much specialty wine and so little time. See what new adventures you can bring home with Drizly.
