What is Zweigelt?

Zweigelt red wine is a child of St. Laurent wine and Blaufränkisch wine, developed by Dr. Fritz Zweigelt in 1922. Hence, the name. Vineyards in Austria are responsible for growing the Zweigelt grapes. It's the most popular type of grape to harvest across all the Austrian wine regions.

Flavors of this wine

The main flavors include raspberry, licorice, cherry, chocolate and black pepper. Zweigelt is a dry red with a medium body that is on the lighter side and has a high acidity level. It tastes similar to pinot noir. If this sounds like a wine you'd enjoy, don't be afraid to pick up a bottle of Zweigelt and give it a try.

How to serve

To enjoy the full flavors of the grapes, it's necessary to age this wine in a cellar for between three and five years. Then, it's ready to drink. Be sure to serve it slightly below room temperature, between 55 and 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep the wine in a cool, dry location and leave it to decant for half an hour before pouring. Use an aroma-collecting wine glass when drinking.

Foods to pair with Zweigelt

This particular red wine is an ideal partner for meat. Barbecued chicken, roasted ham and grilled sausage are all great options to serve with Zweigelt. Whether you're having a picnic or backyard barbecue, grab a bottle or two of Zweigelt wine, and enjoy your time with friends and family. It may be a lesser-known wine like other varieties, such as Carménère, but it certainly deserves a place at the table. Shop Drizly or see if we've made it to your city.
