All about negroamaro
Negroamaro is a dark skinned, red wine grape grown predominantly in the Puglia region of southern Italy. Typically found in red blends, these wines are rich in flavor, and have primary flavors of black fruits like cherry, plums and berries, alongside prunes and thyme. Overtime, their aroma tends to change. Young negroamaro grapes display notes of red cherry and licorice, while older grapes have more aromas like prunes and black pepper. This wine is on the drier side, is medium-full bodied and tends to be relatively high in ABV, ranging 13.5 - 15%.The name ‘negroamaro’ roughly translates to “dark, bitter” in Italian, which may be in reference to the grapes characteristically dark color and high tannin levels.
How to serve
Typical to red wines, negroamaro wines are best served at room temperature, usually about 60 degrees Fahrenheit. They do best in an oversized wine glass, to accentuate their aromas and are recommended to purchase between 5 and 10 years of age. They pair well with meats like chicken and pork, and are known to pair well with dishes like barbeque and spaghetti and meatballs.
