      All about merlot

      Merlot’s flavor profile

Merlot wine has medium tannins and a smooth, silky mouthfeel. It typically features notes of cherry, plum, raspberry, mocha, cedar, tobacco and vanilla. Merlot varieties from areas with warm climates tend to have a purple hue and blackberry or cassis notes, while the ones from areas with cold climates are usually more acidic with strawberry notes. The alcohol by volume (ABV) value of merlot is between 12% and 15%. Most varieties are dry, but some have a sweet flavor that is mostly due to its fruit-forward silky and smooth profile.

What food tastes good with merlot?

Are grilled meats a favorite of yours? If the answer is yes, merlot is a good choice to accompany your meal. This sophisticated red wine also pairs well with sharp cheeses like cheddar and Gorgonzola and meats such as pork, veal and lamb. Try it with braised meats for a rich taste.

If you love appetizers, the dishes that work well with merlot red wine have ingredients like mushrooms, garlic, tomatoes and tomato-based sauces. Thanks to its fruity notes, merlot also pairs well with desserts that contain berries and red fruits.

      When was merlot born?

The first mention of merlot wine in historical sources dates back to 1784, when a Bordeaux public official praised its deliciousness, saying that it was one of the finest wines available. The name of the wine derives from the French word “merle,” which means “blackbird.” Depending on who you ask, the name refers to the fact that blackbirds love to eat merlot grapes or to the dark color of the wine.

At the beginning, many experts considered merlot subpar in comparison with other wines, such as Bordeaux and cabernet sauvignon. Its popularity skyrocketed all around the world in the 1970s - thankfully.
