Layer Cake Malbec is an example of absolute commitment to a quality wine production. The winemaker starts in the vineyard allowing extended ripening on the vine to allow the grapes to develop additional flavor character as well a bit more sugar to increase the richness of the final wine. Grapes are delicately hand-harvested and hand-destemmed to minimize damage to each berry. These vineyards in Mendoza use pure, mountain-fresh snow-melt from the Andes mountains to water their vineyards.
Fruit for this wine comes from vineyards right on the Mendoza River in Argentina. The terrain is rocky, sloped, and at high elevation with large stones which look like the galets, or “river stones" in Chateauneuf du Pape in the Rhone Vally, France. The land is rugged and its hard to believe that any plant can grow here at all, but nonetheless Malbec thrives in this rocky landscape situated at about 3,000ft above sea level. Elevation is key to the richness and complexity of Layer Cake Malbec because the intense sunlight encourages the grapes to grow thicker skins, leading to a more mouth-filling and complex wine. The winemakers rests the wine in French oak to add a bit of toast and vanilla to the balance of flavors.
The Layer Cake Malbec is bold and thought-provoking with intense aromas of black fruit, earth, and dark baker's chocolate. There is an elegant thread of slate minerality from the alluvial cobblestones in the Sea of Stones vineyard, which lends complexity to the flavors of fresh picked blackberries, and chocolate fondue. The wine finishes clean with notes of Toasty vanilla and bacon.
