      What is carignan?

Carignan is a medium-bodied wine from Aragon in Spain. It has a dark, red body with an obvious fruity flavor. You can instantly recognize raspberries, cranberries and licorice aromas of the wine. The wine is mildly bitter in taste owing to the low level of tannins. Often used for wine blends, the carignan wine helps stabilize the pigmentation and body of red varietals. Owing to a balanced taste, this wine pairs well with roasted duck or quail, lamb, chicken, sausage, sauces, cheese, mushroom, grilled vegetables and lasagna. You can also consume it with lighter, delicate dishes.

The grapes have a dark skin. The wines they create have complex flavors. When matured in oak barrels, they acquire the scent of sandalwood. Because the grape is susceptible to fungal rot, it rarely brews into organic red wine and even that requires intensive vineyard management. The grape has traditionally given rich yields but its wines distill quickly. However, in recent times, winemakers are procuring them from aged yards to achieve flavor consistencies. This wine grape grows along the Mediterranean shoreline of Spain, and it tolerates the burning summer heat well. France and Italy are two of its largest producers.

      Wine characteristics

For a fruity red wine, it has remarkable fiery aromas. Pepper and star anise make bold appearances in it. Tastes of cinnamon and cumin are also evident. When opened, the wine is usually left to decant for 30 minutes to somewhat dilute the typical scent of cured meats. The wine grape ripens slowly, and the heat raises its alcohol content. Carignan red wine reflects the climate of its origin, and it saturates with a deep earthy scent. It feels soft and light on the mouth. It is a red wine infused with baking spices. Often, you can identify a faint hint of desiccated herbs.
