Apothic Red Caribbean Cocktail
Drizly Expert Notes
Apothic Red is regularly one of the most purchased wines in America, and it's no surprise why - it's easy-drinking, unpretentious, and delicious. Winemaker Debbie Juergenson creates this wine in a field blend style, similar to that made famous most recently by Orin Swift's Prisoner. While the blend changes from year to year, depending on what the vineyard produces, the result always delivers a luscious, full-bodied, extremely ripe, slightly candied, crowd-pleaser of a wine.
The backbone of Apothic Red is a blend of Zinfandel, Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. You'll find an intertwining of black cherry, vanilla and mocha aromas with baking spices, southern French herbs, and silky, plush tannins on the palate. The finish, sweet chocolate and ripe cherries, lingers briefly...which is perfect since it invites you to take another sip.
It's an extremely approachable wine. It looks great in a tall, sophisticated red wine glass that belongs on primetime TV, but feels right at home in a a Solo cup. Ideally you'll give it a little chill first. Mid 60 degrees Fahrenheit if we're being techincal, but 30-40 minutes in the fridge does thet trick. If that ends up a little cold for our liking cold, just warm it up by putting your hands on the outside of the glass. While Apothic Red is perfectly enjoyable on it's own, many foods do work well. In particular, look for salty, mildly sweet or moderately spicy foods. Think tapas, olives, nuts, popcorn, macerated fruit, cheeses or a well-seasoned steak.
