Martini & Rossi has been producing sweet vermouth since 1863. Birthed in Piedmont in Northwest Italy, sweet vermouth is wine-based and steeped with herbs and botanicals. Each producer has their own proprietary blend and Martini & Rossi is one of the first and most classic. Its original blend is the same one that is still being used today in their Martini & Rossi Rosso Sweet Vermouth.
The base is a blend of Trebbiano from Emilia-Romagna and Catarratto, showing the span of Italy's great indigenous varieties. These two provide a backdrop to numerous herbs and spices that make this recipe unique.
This sweet red vermouth has many uses. It can be drunk on its own, either neat or over ice with a splash of soda water and a twist of orange. It is a traditional aperitif meant to tease the appetite before a meal. Not to mention, it has multiple uses in classic cocktails such as a Vieux Carre, Negroni or Manhattan.
