Product Description

The Braun family can trace its presence in Alsace back to 1583. Since then, generations of farmers and wine growers have followed one another. The Braun family seat was established in Orschwihr in 1902, with the purchase of a 17th Century farmhouse. Located in south-central part of Alsace, midway between Colmar and Mulhouse, Orschwihr has been famous for the quality of its wines since the middle ages. The domaine consists of some 30 parcels, including the Grand Cru site Pfingstberg, documented since 1299, and single sites Bollenberg, Lippelsberg, Effenberg and Meissenberg. The farming has been organic for the past 15 years and has been biodynamic since 2005. All the farming methods used respect the environment and the character of the natural terroir, seeking to produce the highest quality fruit possible. Production is just over 8,000 cases. The result of this labor has been numerous awards, including the Prize for Excellence at the Concours National in 2000, awarded for the consistent quality of all their wines, and in 2006 the Gold Medal at the Concours National des Crémants for their Crémant Brut. Fruity, crisp, delicate, clean, all finesse, a blend of 60% Auxerrois and 40% Pinot Blanc, 1000 to 1200 cases produced. We were impressed to learn that the Crémant Brut is aged for 3 and a half years before disgorgement, then kept at least 6 months before release. With 90% of the domaine’s production sold directly to loyal private customers, there is precious little available for sale beyond western Europe. While Crémant sales are surging in France, they are just beginning in the U.S.
