Crafting 47 wines is no easy business, yet Turley Wine Cellars does just that. Since 1993, this Templeton, California-based company has become famous for its Zinfandel and, to a lesser extent, its Petite Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. With 50 vineyards strewn across Northern California, Turley can maintain expert quality, while continuing its mission to preserve California's distinctive winemaking culture and processes.
Turley is a true artist in the craft of Zinfandel, especially when you consider that only 10 percent of California vineyards grow this type of grape. To create its award-winning Old World red vine Zinfandel, Turley uses grapes sourced from its own vineyards as well as local growers. Turley's second-most popular wine is a lovely Petite Syrah, which it sometimes blends with Zinfandel.
If you're feeling like a true aristocrat, grab a bottle of the Zinfandel. Turley produces more than three dozen types, so finding the right one might take a month or some true dedication. However, you'll find each one sports a strong, bold flavor characterized by high alcohol content, even higher acidity and a fruity taste that's reminiscent of blackberries, blueberries, plum, pepper and spice. It's an explosion of fruity spiciness that makes you want to come back for more.
