Truett-Hurst is a partnership between two wine loving families: Phil and Sylvia Hurst, plus Paul and Heath Dolan. Truett is the name of the first vineyard planted three generations ago by the Dolan family. Together with winemaker Virginia Lambrix, the team seeks not only to produce great wine but improve their environment.
The partners operate 26 acres on Dry Creek in Sonoma County. They grow Zinfandel (some of which is the ancient Italian Primitivo variety) and Petit Syrah. Along with their vines, they also have an organic garden, tasting room and picnic grounds. The creek that runs through the property is home to spawning salmon and steelhead, something the partners value greatly.
Truett-Hurst operates with a sustainable, holistic philosophy. From the creek to the bees to the construction materials of the winery, they aim to minimize their environmental footprint and leave the land better than when they arrived. The partnership is also part of the Dry Creek Habitat Enhancement Project, which builds backwaters and side channels to reduce erosion, improve water quality and provide spawning grounds for the salmon and steelhead.
To Truett-Hurst, it's not just about the wine. It's about a comprehensive environmental approach that respects and highlights their unique territory.
