All about Sutter Home
As one of America’s largest family-run independent wineries, Sutter Home Winery has a seat at the table of the United States’ finest winemakers. It’s not surprising, given this is the brand that brought us White Zinfandel, that sweet and delicious rosé that rocked everyone’s world when it arrived in the 1970s.
Sutter Home came to be in the late 1800s when a Swiss-German immigrant named John Thomann established his own distillery and winery in Napa County. When he passed away, another Swiss family called the Leunbergers took over the estate. They also gave it its current name of Sutter Home. Sadly, the Prohibition-era caused the winery to shut down — a setback that kept their doors closed until 1948. But a pair of Italian immigrant brothers appeared and saved the business, producing locally loved Napa Valley wines.
The business took off in the 1960s when one of the brothers’ sons started vinifying Zinfandel. The rest, as they say, is history — Sutter Home has experienced a meteoric rise to fame and continues to put out some of the most beloved wines on earth.
