All about Dark Horse Wine

You’ve no doubt seen bottles of Dark Horse wines at your local grocery; it’s one of the more widely distributed, reasonably-priced wines in the industry. The Dark Horse brand is part of E&J Gallo’s impressive portfolio of value wines. California-based winemaker, Beth Liston, had worked for Gallo for well over a decade when she created the line of under $10 wines. Dark Horse was crafted with millennial drinkers in mind. Many of this generation appreciate good quality at a bargain and Dark Horse delivers just that. Rather than focus on locally cultivated fruit, Liston and her team source grapes from around the world, experimenting with different varieties and blends and breaking away from outdated winemaking traditions. The philosophy, like the brand’s name suggests, may not subscribe to industry norms, yet Dark Horse wines continue to win awards and gain ground in a crowded market.

Dark Horse red wines, especially the Big Red Blend, are at the brand’s core. Table classics like pinot noir, merlot and cabernet sauvignon are popular, though, in recent years, younger consumers have favored the rosé and sparkling options, not to mention the 375-mL canned wines, like the crisp pinot grigio, designed for backyard barbecues and summer evenings on the porch.
