Whitehaven began in 1994 in Marlborough, New Zealand and has grown to be a known and trusted producer of consistently high-quality wines. The winery takes full advantage of the excellent conditions in Marlborough, including long days of sunshine in a cool climate that allow grapes to enjoy a lengthy growing season. Over months of ripening, sauvignon blanc develops in both intensity and complexity. Furthermore Marlborough is know for a considerable diurnal range which is the difference of the temperature during the day to the temperature at night. This allows the grapes to retain bright, tart, refreshing acidity while also extending the growing season.
Winemakers have known for many years that the best wine is often made from poor soil, and Whitehaven Vineyards are selected for low fertility as well as sandy soil with excellent drainage. These factors combine to force a vine to work a bit harder to ripen fruit, and that struggle reveals an intense, fruit-driven complexity. Whitehaven is committed to sourcing the best grapes from over 30 outstanding vineyards, from the well-known Wairau Plain and Southern Valleys to the Awatere and Ure valleys. New Zealand wineries as a whole, including Whitehaven, are generally committed to sustainable wine making. The green lush image of New Zealand that is shown in movies is something that Whitehaven is committed to protecting. The winery makes every effort to recycle waste and conserve water and energy. In the vineyards, sheep are introduced to keep grass and weeds managed as well as add some complimentary fertilizer.
A truly intense and refreshing sauvignon blanc with rich aromas of grapefruit, lemon and grass, Whitehaven Sauvignon Blanc is a classic example of Marlborough's excellence and is perfect with raw oysters, fish and chips or baked haddock.
Founded in 1994 by Sue White and her late husband Greg. Inspired by a dream, the pair shed corporate lives to sail the Pacific in a 48ft yacht the Chanticleer. Sheltering from the hurricane season the pair anchored in the safe haven of the Marlborough Sounds. Their stay in Marlborough inspired a return to dry land; and establishing an award winning wine company was just the project. They called their label Whitehaven – reflecting the importance of family, and the calm port 'haven' they'd found while anchoring in Marlborough.
