Weihenstaphaner Hefe Weissbier is a truly classic German wheat beer, so classic in fact that it is brewed by the oldest brewery in the world. Going back several centuries, the Weihenstaphaner brewery has been creating this luscious beer for longer than the United States has been a country. Not only is the beer rich with tradition, but it is a true example of what a hefeweizen is supposed to taste like.
Hefeweizens are designed to be poured into a tall, shapely glass. The beer is packaged with a bit of the unfiltered yeast sitting as sediment at the bottom of the bottle, and must be combined back in with the beer before drinking to achieve maximum flavor potential. If you have a proper glass, simply pour the beer aggressively by turning the bottle completely upside down and allow it to fill the cup, but if you have something that might overflow, be a bit more careful, save a quarter of the beer in the bottle, swish it around and then top off your glass. The effect of this is to produce a wonderfully cloudy yellow beer with huge aroma notes of bananas and crushed cloves. Much of this character is actually a derivative of the German hefeweizen yeast, hence why it is important to be sure it is included in the pour. The wheat component of the brew provides a light cracker flavor along with a wonderfully rich and slick feel to the beer which combines delightfully with those banana notes.
Weihenstaphaner Hefe Weissbier is a wonderful pairing for numerous foods. The fruit and spice pair delightfully with a cheese plate brimming with brie, goat cheese, dried figs, and honey. It's a wonderful pairing for a light pasta dish basted with butter and a side of steamed clams. Enjoy this hefeweizen at a fancy dinner party, but don't be afraid to show up with a six pack for a mid week baseball game viewing.
