Three Floyds Zombie Dust is one of those cult classic beers of the modern American craft scene. Coming from a small brewery in northern Indiana, just an hour or so away from Chicago, it may be the best IPA coming out of the midwest… though they refer to the 6.2% abv hop bomb as a pale ale. Perhaps their titling of this beer as something smaller than it is is apropos of who the brewers at Three Floyds are as brewers. Their beers are known to be big, intense, versions of your favorite styles. They don't care about style or history, they care about flavor, creativity, and exciting their customers with world class brews.
Almost demanding to be poured into a wide rimmed glass, the beer pours a bright orange color, vibrant with tiny bubbles of carbonation finishing at the top in an inch of puffy white head. The nose on this beer, and the reason that it should be enjoyed from a glass, is near perfection. The fact that no fruit is used in the brewing of this beer is surprising as the aromas are ripe with the tropical notes of mangoes, pineapples, grapefruit, and tangerines. The flavor is similarly sultry, dominated by citrus zest, lemons, peaches and pine. The beer is flavorful without bitterness, the hops balanced with just a touch of malt sweetness.
Three Floyds Zombie Dust is known as one of the best hoppy beers in the world for a reason and if you like those IPA flavors, this is a beer for you and a beer for all occasions. Pair a glass with a gooey grilled cheese sandwich lined with apricot jam, buttered and crusty on the outside.
