The blend of Napa Valley varietals in this wine are Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Syrah, Syrah and Charbono. The wine is then aged in new and used French oak barrels depicting an etching by artist Franceso de Goya. The wine consistantly earns outstanding reviews and is a favorite addition to many wine lists and cellars. The current winemaker is Jen Beloz and created by Orin Swift cellars founded by Dave Phinney who first came up with the unique blend. The winery was quite small in 2010 only producing about 400 cases of wine to the current 85,000 in just 10 vintages.
This wine is a bigger more bold flavored red with forward tannis and big chewy fruit flavors that like to hang around in your mouth. The aromas of Bing cherries, cloves, dark chocolate and roasted figs fill the air while the wine is sitting and opening up. The flavors of black pepper, dark chocolate and casis will hang on your tounge for a long while, exposing the rich deep supple tannins. Due to the instense flavors and aroma of this wine, the best foods to pair with are dishes that are full of flavor and need a strong complement. Think rack of lamb or lamb chops, red meat dishes, cassoulet, stuffed veal chops, barbeque and pork dishes with heavy rich sauses. This wine can be aerrated or decanted to soften the tannins and for ease of drinking.
The Prisoner Red Blend was inspired by the “mixed blacks" first made by the Italian immigrants who originally settled in Napa Valley. The Prisoner is now the most recognized Napa Valley red blend, leading the resurgence of interesting blends by incorporating Zinfandel with the unlikely mix of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, Syrah, and Charbono.
