Summer Cherry Punch

Summer Cherry Punch

Summer Cherry Punch

    • Level: Medium
    • Prep: 10 min
George Washington was quite fond of cherries, so it seems appropriate to celebrate Independence Day with a seasonal cherry punch. This recipe uses brandy which was a popular beverage in Colonial times and Merlot which adds depth to the cherry flavor.

    Ingredients

For the Garnish: Granny Smith Apples, Sweet Cherries and Blackberries

    Tools

    • Muddler
    • Hawthorne strainer
    • Pitcher

    How to Mix

    1. Wash and stem cherries.
    2. Place cherries, lemon juice and sugar in the bottom of a large pitcher or jar that holds at least 10 cups of liquid.
    3. Muddle cherries with a wooden spoon until they are finely mashed.
    4. Add in brandy, merlot and bitters and stir.
    5. Refrigerate at least 4 hours, or even better, overnight.
    6. Strain mixture through a fine mesh sieve.
    7. Return to the refrigerator until ready to serve.
    8. Garnish a 10oz glass with a fruit skewer.
    9. Serve straight up with a generous splash of sparking water.

For the Garnish: Cut a few apples into thick slices and using a one inch cookie cutter, cut out stars. Toss the stars in the lemon juice for the punch and strain, reserving juice. Alternating, pierce blackberries, cherries and apple stars onto skewers. Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve.
