When M.W. Heron created Southern Comfort in 1874, little did he know that it would become the iconic liquor of New Orleans. Despite popular belief, however, Southern Comfort isn't technically a whiskey. Made from neutral spirits, whiskey flavoring, spice and peaches, this “Grand Ole' Drink of the South" has been a staple of American cocktails for over 140 years. Crisp and fruity with a strong, warm finish, Southern Comfort brings people together, and not just on Bourbon Street.
Southern Comfort has a similar look to its whiskey siblings with an amber-brown color that seems to turn red under direct light. Despite its distillation process and reputation for fruitiness, the nose isn't overwhelming, yet its sweetness foreshadows the flavors ahead. It has a caramel, peachy taste, yet it isn't syrupy like some flavored liqueurs, and follows up with a warmth in your chest.
To get the full flavor of Southern Comfort, you can drink it neat or on the rocks, but don't miss out on a few of the cocktails that made it famous. A SoCo and lime is a shooter that's not too harsh, shaken with a splash of lime juice for a mix of sweet and tart. Another option is the Mardi Gras-inspired Hurricane, which contains orange and pineapple juice, grenadine, sweet and sour mix and Southern Comfort. Whichever way you mix it, be sure to first buy Southern Comfort online through Drizly.
