Schofferhofer Grapefruit Hefeweizen is a first of its kind. A traditional German brewed wheat beer that has been blended, 50/50, with a carbonated grapefruit drink made of entirely natural ingredients. Where the idea came from is unclear and why more of this sort of beer doesn't exist in the world is equally uncertain. Using age old brewing concepts to create a wheat beer bursting with natural fruit notes from the use of a proprietary yeast strain, the addition of grapefruit seems like a match made in...well, in Germany perhaps.
Not 100% beer and not 100% juice, drink this one out of a traditionally tall hefeweizen glass for that full Bavarian effect. Pouring a hazy orange color, the beer is reminiscent of a classic hef in that cloudy way. There is unfiltered yeast leftover in the bottle which adds to the body of the beer as well as the aroma and flavor. The head billows on the top like a cloud over a tropical island. The nose on this beer is big and complex. Banana and clove qualities meld with the ruby red grapefruit sweetness for something equally German as tropical. The flavor is sweet, yet balanced. There are obviously huge notes of grapefruit with each sip, but there are also hints of bananas and oranges, and the backbone of the beer is a smooth bit of wheat.
Schofferhofer Grapefruit Hefeweizen is a beer made for daytime drinking in the middle of the summer. Perhaps the brewers were envisioning the public park in Munich, lounging underneath a tree, watching colorful street buskers as they laugh with friends for hours on end, when they thought up this combination. Perhaps you might have to settle for enjoying a six pack with friends in your front yard or at a Tahiti themed pool party. Still, not the worst way to spend a day. Pair the beer with enormous german pretzels, weisswurst on a soft bun, or a slice of decadent cheesecake.
