Easily one of the most hyped and well-loved seasonal styles, pumpkin beers seem to completely take over in the fall. For the most part, we think that's a good thing. Whether you want it to taste like a pie in a glass, a perfectly roasted pumpkin, or even just pumpkin-y soda, we hit all the types. (Try these first without a cinnamon and sugar rim on the glass, please. Pretty please.)
Fisherman's Pumpkin Stout
Made in: Gloucester, MA
Why we like it: Unlike the rest of the pumpkins, this darker, richer version almost tastes like a lightly spiced pumpkin pie with a chocolate cookie crumb crust. Fisherman's really expands the pumpkin beer genre with this gem.
Dogfish Head Punkin Ale
Made in: Milton, DE
Why we like it: One of the greats. The spicing is not overdone, and what really shines is the roasted pumpkin flavor. It's as if they sprinkled a bit of brown sugar on a pumpkin before a long, slow roast. Lots of caramel flavors, but definitely not overly sweet.
Cisco Brewer's Pumple Drumkin
Made in: Nantucket, MA
Why we like it: Lighter on the spice and heavier on the hops. The pumpkin comes through well. This does not taste like pumpkin pie in a glass (which can sometimes work [see above] but often times completely fails). Bonus points for the label, which borders on looking like art from a modern children's book . . . a book we want to read. Also, it comes in bottles and CANS!
Southern Tier Pumking
Made in: Lakewood, NY
Why we like it: This is one of the best around. This has almost everything one looks for in a pumpkin beer. It has the richness, the body, the spice, the pumpkin flavor. If you've never had this and you like pumpkin beer, what are you waiting for?
Made in: Portland, ME
Why we like it: Admittedly, this is our least favorite of the group. By a lot. We like this one for seasonal drinking games because of the low alcohol content and easy drinkability. This is not a beer to savor, though.
