Pilsner Urquell is the original golden beer. That's right, before Pilsner, beers were dark and robust, with inconsistent quality. As the first pilsner type blond lager, Pilsner Urquell created the inspiration for much of the beer produced in the world today. Brewed in the Czech Republic, in Plzen, it's history dates back to 1838.
In that year, a momentous event happened in the city. The people of Plzen were tired of bad beer! They protested and dumped 36 barrel of bad beer in the street. Something had to be done! A group of important townsfolk decided to create a brewery that would be run by the city - with rules in place to ensure that quality standards are kept high. They hired a visionary Bavarian brewmaster named Josef Groll to make the beer. He combined new techniques to create a pale malted barley with local Czech hops and the soft water of Plzen to create a new beer.
It shined in the light and the townspeople could see through it! This was a new development! They could ensure that there was no setiment in the beer and that it was pure of contaminants. The townspeople rejoiced! And, just like that, beer was changed forever.
Pilsner Urquell is a Czech pilsner that has an earthy, fresh baked bread aroma, wit hints of hops and honeysuckle. It's suble malty sweetness balances the herbal "noble" Czech hops that give some nice floral notes. Ending with a pleasing bitterness and crisp bite.
Pilsner Urquell is a great go-to beer for hanging out, watching a game, going to a BBQ, or chillin' in the back yard. And, it is so good with food! A roasted chicken, pork loin, or cheese tray with aged cheeses are perfect pairings for this. It's herbal characterics really play nicely with ingredients like rosemary, thyme, or mustard seed.
