Product Description

Old Chub is a Scottish style ale brewed with copious amounts of crystal and chocolate malts, and a dash of beechwood-smoked malts. While Dale's Pale Ale (the best-tasting canned beer I've ever had, according to many brewers and beer experts) is a showcase of both hops and pale malts, Old Chub is a celebration of malts. The cola-colored beer features a dense, tawny head, a creamy mouthful and flavors of caramel, chocolate and lightly roasted malt. Complex and rich, it finishes with a whisper of smokiness that calls to mind a fine single malt scotch. Old Chub weighs in at 8 % alcohol by volume.

Drizly Expert Notes

Oskar Blues Old Chub is an 8% ABV Scotch Ale brewed with base malts and specialty grains, like crystal and chocolate malts, and a hint of beechwood-smoked malt. Old Chub pours dark reddish brown with edges of garnet. The aroma brings a depth of licorice, spice, molasses, milk chocolate, toasty and caramelly malts. On the flavor bitter dark fruits and an underlying spicy anise bitterness covers semi-sweet malt flavors of cocoa, toasted bread, caramel candy, and coffee, and touches of smoke. Despite its burly 8%, Old Chub moves on the palate with a medium mouthfeel and nimble manner, while satisfying the malt flavors the tongue craves.

Oskar Blues was founded in Lyons, Colorado in 1997. Oskar Blues was one of the first breweries to release canned craft beer in the United States. While holding its place as one of the important pioneers for craft beer in Colorado, Oskar Blues has since opened up brewing facilities in Brevard, North Carolina and Austin, Texas. Oskar Blues has always held onto canning its beers. The advantages of cans over bottles include 1) lighter weight for convenience, 2) more environmentally friendly for transport, 3) protection from light and air, and more. In addition, a water-based polymer protects the beer from coming in contact with the can's aluminum. Let the urban myth that beer in bottles “tastes" better than in cans be dispelled.
