Tenuta I Gelsi was founded in 2003 by Pasquale Bafunno and Ruggiero Potito, who teamed up to enhance the viticultural heritage of their family in what is one of the most picturesque corners of Basilicata. The estate is located in Rionero in Vulture, very close to Monticchio Bagni and near the famous lakes of volcanic origin that are the source of some of the most popular mineral waters of Italy. The estate is on the slope of Vulture that overlooks the hills of Irpinia between the plateau Calitrano and Ofanto Valley, where the volcanic ash and lava giaciture mingle with clay-limestone of medium consistency. The volcano in Monticchio Bagni provides the ingredients for the unique terroir of this land. While all of volcanic origin, the soil varies from town to town thanks to several eruption eras, resulting in a chemical change in the magma between era and, consequently, a change in the type of rock that is formed from the different volcan activities (either eruptive or effusive). In 2003, Tenuta I Gelsi purchased an additional 37 acres of vineyards and constructed a new winery, as well as, more bottling and warehousing facilities to handle the larger production. Today, the estate consists of a total of 66 acres of vineyards, the expanded existing winery and the new winery completed in 2003. Tenuta i Gelsi focuses on the celebrated Aglianico variety, dedicating 45 acres of its vineyards to this local grape. While always dedicated to traditional, local wines, the estate’s wines are sold in two distinct lines: Tenuta I Gelsi and Ofanto. The Tenuta I Gelsi line refers to the mulberry trees lining the entrance of the estate and offers consumers approachable, easy-drinking wines. The Ofanto line, on the other hand, is a selection of fine wines made only in the best vintages from the estate’s oldest vines.
