Product Description

New Belgium's most well-known beer is Fat Tire Amber Ale. It's a clear, coppery-colored amber ale that's smooth and easy to drink. Fat Tire was inspired by a co-founder’s bicycle trip around Belgium, and the recipe incorporates the sweet aromas and flavors of his travels—toasty, caramel malts; fresh fennel, clean green apple; and sweet biscuits. If you enjoy smooth, medium-bodied beers, this ubiquitous craft beer is a tasty one to add to your reserve. In the craft brewing scene, Colorado-based New Belgium Brewing Company is quite the success story. Before 2002, you could only find its beers in 16 states; today, they are the country’s third largest craft brewery.

Drizly Expert Notes

New Belgium Fat Tire was created by the fine brewers of Fort Collins, Colorado, but it can really be said that it was born in the Belgian countryside. Inspired by a bike trip through Belgium, the fragrance of the local terroir, the spice of the abbey beers, and the complexity of the Belgian's history, the founders of New Belgium came back to the States and immediately began work on this amber ale concept. Meant to mimic some of the European amber ales that would be brewed for English troops stationed on the mainland, it incorporates the rich history of both British and Belgian style beers. It has both spice and bitterness, both flavor and refreshment.

Poured into proper Belgian-style tulip, Fat Tire pours a glistening amber hue topped with a frothy off-white head lacing the top portion of the glass. This is by no means a standard amber ale, however. It's nose showcases the rich malts used in the brewing process through hints of honey, caramel, butterscotch, and shades of dried berries. The Belgian-style yeast reveals a tinge of fennel and green apple. The body is rich, but delicate and quenching to drink. Flavors of toasted biscuits, toffee, and tea-like bitterness on the back end round things out, making for a flavorful gulp that isn't overbearingly sweet nor bitter. It's a perfectly balanced beer showcasing how to use big malts and big hops without anything overpowering the palate.

Enjoy New Belgium Fat Tire paired with a seared flank steak topped with a classic, rich peppercorn sauce and a side of thick cut fries. Place a bottle beside a plate of perfectly battered and fried fish filet alongside a cup of vinegar for that British flair. It's an ideal beer to satisfy both beer nerds and light lager advocates both. Appreciate a pint after a long bike ride through your local park or while relaxing by the fire pit on a warm Autumn evening.
