A Bohemian-style beer, National Bohemian Beer (also known as "Natty Boh") was first brewed by the National Brewing Company in Baltimore, Maryland in 1885. As the name implies, this is a method of beer-making that originated in Europe in the 1800s using Bavarian-style laagering techniques. Similar in flavor to a Pilsner, this style of beer has the unique claim to being “the world’s first golden beer.” Using only the finest ingredients— sparkling pure water, fine grains, choice hops, and a special strain of selected yeast—every batch of Natty Boh is patiently aged resulting in a medium-bodied beer with a smooth color and a distinct hop aroma. We recommend serving this beer chilled, whether from the bottle, can, or a Pilsner glass.View all products by National Bohemian
National Bohemian, or Natty Boh as any true lovers of this Baltimore classic would call it, is a traditional style Czech pilsner who's notoriety in the state of Maryland is well deserved. A stalwart of the mid-atlantic brewing scene since 1885, this undeniably delightful lager has held a consistent place in any local beer drinker's fridge for their entire beer drinking life. Known as the beer “from the land of pleasant living", it has to be assumed that a can of this ice cold beer was part of what made it just so pleasant.
The beer pours a slightly cloudy golden color, but it isn't exactly a beer meant to be poured in any receptacle besides your mouth - this is most definitely a beer to be enjoyed straight from the bottle or can. The aroma and flavor is prototypical of the original Czech pilsner, which was the first ever golden beer to be brewed. Sweet cereal grains provide a dulcet base for lager yeasts to slowly ferment at low temperatures over a slow course of time, creating a clean, crisp flavor. Noble Czech hops provide a wonderfully grassy, floral essence to the finish of the beer with just enough bitterness to balance the sweetness of the malts, making this beer a joy to drink all summer long.
National Bohemian may be known as a fan favorite in the city of Baltimore, but it should be enjoyed in every city as long as the goal is for good times. Pair a six pack with a backyard bbq with your buddies. Make it a full spread of hamburgers, hot dogs, salads, chips, lawn games, swimming pools, and a baseball game streaming through the radio speakers.
