Drizly Expert Notes

Narragansett Lager holds a special place in the history of United States beer culture. It was originally brewed way back in 1890 by a group of beer brewing pioneers and that European beer quality holds up today. Their cute, quirky slogan, “Hey neighbor! Have a 'gansett!" was coined by none other than Dr. Seuss. They were the first brewery to sponsor a sports team, having their name synonymous with the Boston Red Sox from 1944-1975. The beer is made with midwest malts, Pacific Northwest hops, and Iowa corn. 'Gansett, as the cool kids call it, is quintessentially American and makes a fine addition to any weekend.

Being a crisp, cold, American style lager, this one is best enjoyed in the most simple of fashions: crack open a can and begin sipping. If you feel like being fancy, enjoy it from a glass and note the clean, straw yellow beer that booms with little bubbles and a small frothy head. The aroma is as clean as the color and the flavor continues this trend. This sort of lightly flavored lager is one of the hardest to brew as any small off-flavors will instantly be noticeable against the pristinely simple malt and hop character and not a bad flavor can be found from top to bottom in a 'Gansett.

Narragansett Lager, being a New England specialty, something that the folks of the Northeast hold close to their hearts, is most ideal paired with foods of the region. The clean malty flavor will bring out the sweetness and salinity of locally caught shellfish without overpowering their mellow flavors. Try it with a platter of fresh oysters or team it with a heap of fresh steamed clams and crab legs. It's refreshing quality makes it a perfect beer for salty game day snacks and can cool your palate with a tray of jalapeño poppers. Enjoy it on the docks or sip it beside an oak tree. It's great in all situations.
