Johnnie Walker Blue Label is a notoriously expensive bottle due to simple market economics: It is an incredibly rare blend. The scotches that form the Blue Label blend are themselves rare, and only one in every 10,000 casks is considered to be of sufficient quality to deserve the label. Johnnie Walker Blue Label stands out among continuous-production whiskies and is deemed well worth the high price tag.
The standard maturation period is at least three years. Because Johnnie Walker Blue Label is a blend of different scotches, the total age — that is, the sum of all the ages of all the scotches in the blend — must equal at least 28 years. Indeed, some of the single-malts within Blue Label are 60 years old on their own, as this is an exceptionally rare and high-quality whisky (as proof of this, consider that only one in every 10,000 casks meets the criteria for Blue Label).
Johnnie Walker Blue Label blends a number of different Scotch whiskies, making it a mixture of different single malt grain whisky and Scotch. Single malt Scotches are created from a single variety of malted barley, though flavor variations occur with the region in Scotland in which they are produced. All casks selected to go into Blue Label are rare and come from the Speyside and Highland distilleries and include such whiskies as Clynelish, Benrinnes, Cardhu, and Islay malts.
