American blended whiskeys must contain at least 20% straight whiskey because of local regulations. The producers can fill the rest of the bottle with whatever they want, but they typically use neutral spirits such as vodka. This makes the American version of the spirit drastically different from blended Scotch whiskies, which contain a variety of malts from diverse distilleries, but not neutral spirits. 

However, don't think that American blends are just whiskey-flavored vodkas. Many breweries are working to bring this type of alcoholic beverage to the next level, creating carefully paired blends of different straight whiskeys.

For blended bourbon, the regulations are a little different: this spirit must contain at least 51% straight bourbon, and most of the alcohol in the beverage must derive from bourbon. As for blended whiskeys, the remaining percentage usually consists of neutral spirits.

Could you imagine a Manhattan without a good-quality American whiskey? Probably not, but you should know that there are many other cocktails you can make with your favorite whiskey.

Who said that you can only sip whiskey on its own? American blends have a light flavor that pairs well with many dishes. Try seafood or spicy Asian dishes like sushi or curry, which are excellent food pairings for this spirit.
