All about reposado tequila
What is reposado?
Reposado tequila has the complexity of aged añejo tequilas and the yummy flavor of young blanco tequila. In short, it's the best of both worlds. This spirit ages for 11 months, which is sort of an ideal age to reach a good balance between the agave flavor and the notes that originate from oak barrels. Funnily enough, the word "reposado" means "rested" in Spanish, so it looks like this spirit owes its deliciousness to a long, relaxing siesta in oak barrels.
How do they make it?
To create a complex reposado liquor without destroying the original agave flavor of young tequila, distillers mostly use American or French oak barrels. The spirit slowly absorbs the glycerin in the wood, generating distinctive flavor notes that balance the sweetness of agave. Also, this process creates the natural golden color of reposado tequila. No artificial colors here! However, there are some creative distillers who use whiskey, bourbon, cognac or wine barrels to achieve original flavor notes in their tequilas.
How to drink reposado tequila
You can certainly sip this type of tequila on its own, thanks to its pleasantly complex flavor profiles. However, use it to mix cocktails as well. You won't spend the extra money required to purchase a sophisticated añejo tequila and avoid the artificial colorants in certain unaged tequila varieties.
The distinctive flavor of reposado varieties works well in margaritas, palomas, Juan Collins and tequinis. Use it to replace other complex liquors in cocktail recipes. For example, why don't you use it in lieu of whiskey in a Manhattan? Add sweet and dry vermouth, and you're done.
