When describing Don Julio 1942, plebian adjectives like “special” don’t do this luxury tequila justice. The Don Julio brand is arguably the most well-known tequila in the world, and Don Julio 1942 helped define the tequila market as you know it today. Don Julio 1942 is an Añejo tequila, a category that demands a small-batch, prolonged aging process leading to a richer, smoother product — no limes or salt needed. The famous brand’s 1942 tequila ages for more than two years (which is quite a bit longer than other Añejo varieties) in Kentucky bourbon barrels, an artisanal process that creates a truly memorable yet delicate tasting experience.
In recent years, luxury tequila has grown more popular, leading to increased prices for exclusive brands like Don Julio 1942; on average, you can expect to pay anywhere from $170 to $200 for a 750 mL bottle of Don Julio 1942 (and upwards of $360 for the 1.5L bottle). Prices are rising throughout the tequila supply chain, from the agave to the glass bottles, and it only makes sense that the sticker price reflects the additional industry costs. In comparison to other popular, top-shelf Añejo tequilas, Don Julio 1942 is actually a more affordable option; it’s not uncommon to spend more than $200 a bottle for high-quality tequila brands.
Don Julio 1942 is considered a top-shelf liquor, even if it’s not the most expensive brand on the shelf by a long shot. The sleek bottle shape is highly recognizable and indicates the quality and care imbued in its contents. The process of making Don Julio 1942 is laborious, using only the highest quality ingredients and an extensive two-year aging process (in curated Kentucky bourbon barrels). The top shelf denotation doesn’t necessarily mean that the price for a tequila brand is steep; in the case of Don Julio 1942, its well-earned spot along the top of the bar speaks mostly to its quality.
Don Julio 1942 is an excellent gift for the tequila lover in your life; it’s a well-recognized brand synonymous with quality and craftsmanship. This is a tequila that’s meant to be sipped by itself (leave the limes and blenders at home) and shared among a small group of friends — if you’re lucky, the gift recipient might offer you a glass. Because of its extensive aging process and rich, honey-like flavor, Don Julio 1942 makes a fine gift for whiskey fans as well. In fact, it’s a truly versatile liquor that you can substitute in a variety of traditional whiskey-based cocktails.
