Great Rum. Exact same I had when I visited Nicaragua

This is my go-to "white" rum. Perfect in Daiquiris or any number of tiki drinks that call for white or lightly aged column-still rum. I found this rum initially because it's what's typically used in Daiquiris at Death & Co (one of New York's greatest cocktail bars... you should really go if you haven't).

For the price, this might be the cleanest white rum I've ever had. You'd never guess it, but this blended very well with the frozen fruit drinks I made with it. Not quite for sipping - it's still rum, after all - but if you like white rum drinks you're going to do quite well with this one.

A major food magazine put this rum at the top of their list of silver rums. I'm assembling a rum collection for a hot summer - so I had to try Flor de Cana. Silver rums are usually mixed, but I tasted it straight from a rocks glass in order to actually assess it. There's a harsh note up front on the nose, and that's about it. Maybe some honey or honeysuckle? Hard to say. This isn't totally bad or a negative, really. On the palette, the harsh note is there as well, but it's brief. Sometimes the harsh notes lesson on the second or third sip, and it does in this case - but it remains noticeable if you look for it. There's a ever-so-slight touch of sugarcane. There's a bit more mouthfeel at room temperature then you might expect, just short of syrupy. If it isn't clear by now, there's not a lot to this rum. For giggles I threw some ice on top of it and as it chilled down the harshness goes away and more of the sweetness comes through. My most prominent thought the entire experience was "this is ALMOST indistinguishable from a mid-tier vodka." . And that makes perfect sense if you want to add alcohol and some minor elements of sweetness to a rum sour or a cuba libre and nothing else. I can't in good faith give this rum anything higher then a three stars, but with the caveat that what's in this bottle is most likely exactly what the makers intended and fills a distinct and necessary role at the bar. If there's a deal on it, I recommend buying it.
