A brief look at spiced rum

Spiced rum may be no longer the favorite drink of pirates, but it's certainly a favorite at any beach party or Tiki bar. The producers infuse it with a wide variety of spices to create outstanding flavor profiles. Drink it on its own or use it to spice up your favorite cocktail.

      The distillation process

This type of flavored rum results from the addition of whatever spice the producer fancies after the distillation process. If you add spices before distillation, they will lose flavor, making the fantasy of the distiller useless. In most varieties, the producer adds spices only after the rum has aged to prevent the wood of the barrel from creating unwanted flavor notes.

However, which spices do they use? Well, almost all of them. The most common ones in rum production come from dried fruits, edible bark, seeds, leaves and roots. In the past, spiced rums enjoyed use as medicinal cures.

Some terrific ways to enjoy spiced rum

Spiced rum varieties are the protagonists of many classic cocktails like Long Island iced teas, ginger daiquiris and ginger rum punches. During a beach party, you can use them to create a new version of the traditional rum and cola.

Alternatively, if you want to emulate pirates, you can mix your own Red Beard cocktail. Mix spiced rum, coconut rum, lemon-lime soda and grenadine syrup. Also, have you ever tried hot toddy? Mix rum with honey, lemon juice, boiling water and a cinnamon stick to help you feel better when you have a cold.
