Mount Gay has been making rum longer than any other rum distillery in the world and is proud to have 300 years of heritage, mastering our craft since 1703. Our heritage blend, Mount Gay Eclipse, is named after the 1910 total solar eclipse that was visible from Barbados. It's a blend of rums distilled in traditional copper pot and column stills, then matured for 2 years solely in American whiskey casks. Eclipse is the embodiment of the Mount Gay style with notes of vanilla, almond, ripe banana and dark chocolate.
Decent rum for the price. Has a pretty strong bite to it.

Except for the new heavy and awkward bottle which requires decanting to smaller size, that has caused us to move on without Mt Gay in our lives.

The first rum I ever enjoyed, and still enjoy. Growing up in Australia we only had bad rum. In 1972 delivering Kialoa II back from the Med to the US with a stop in Barbados, I was introduced to Mt. Gay. Wow. We bought 20 cases at $10/case and on arrival in Miami we were invited to every party, once it became known we had Mt. Gay.

FAQs
You'll also find this called Amber Rum. This rum is aged in wooden casks, which gives it that golden color. Those wooden casks also change the flavor of the rum a bit - making this rum varietal taste more smoky-sweet. The longer rum is aged, the darker it will become. The main difference between white (or light) rum and gold rum is aging. White rum is aged for less time than this variety which changes the color and flavor.
No, gold rum and dark rum are different. Gold rum is a golden, amber hue. Dark rum is well aged rum from charred barrels. Both are rich in flavor, but dark rum is more full bodied and has more of a molasses flavor than gold rum.
Yes, but it's not going to taste the same. Since gold rum has a darker color and bolder flavor, it's not the classic match for mojitos. Mojitos are clear and refreshing - making white rum the best option.
Absolutely. Both gold and white rum are perfect options for your piña colada. Gold rum is a versatile rum that can go with a number of different tropical drinks. The only we would not recommend is a mojito - as white rum is the best pair for this cocktail.
About the brand
Mount Gay is the oldest rum distillery in the world and is proud to have over 300 years of experience and heritage, mastering its craft since 1703.
Barbados, the birthplace of rum, has been home to Mount Gay since 1703. As the easternmost island of the Caribbean, Barbados is exposed to elements such as the famous Trade Winds creating ideal growing conditions for sugarcane. Barbados is formed of coral limestone, a porous mineral which acts as a natural filter for the groundwater deep beneath the island. This groundwater serves as the sole water source for Mount Gay and is pulled from a private artesian well, the very same well used since the foundation of the distillery. Barbados offers natural yeast that, combined with coral-filtered water maximizes flavor during fermentation. Our tropical climate accelerates the concentration of aromas and flavors during the aging in casks. It is this terroir that imbues our rum with its singular taste.
The combination of each step in our process delivers unique, rich, flavorful rums that set Mount Gay apart. The distinctive character of Mount Gay comes from using rums distilled both in traditional column and copper pot stills. Mount Gay ages every batch of rum separately in a diverse range of casks including American whiskey, bourbon and cognac barrels. For over 300 years we've relied on the expertise and artistry of the Master Blenders to ensure every bottle of Mount Gay retains the signature character and profile which is celebrated allover the world. Our Master Blender Trudiann Branker and her team of experts bring to life our long heritage creating rich and flavorful rums whilst preparing for the future.

This is our Mount Gay take on the traditional Barbadian Rum Punch. Remember our favorite rhyme when crafting your rum punch: one of sour, two of sweet, three of strong and four of weak, a dash of bitters and a sprinkle of spice, serve well chilled with plenty of ice.
This twist on the original brings the rich complexity of Mount Gay Black Barrel and slight bitter sweetness of spiced simple syrup for the perfect wintertime Old Fashioned.
