There's also different varietals of rum which vary in color and flavor. Whiite (also known as light or silver) rum is the lighest in color and flavor. Rum also comes in golden and dark, both fo which are named by their color. Golden and dark rum have more of a caramel kick - dark rum being the darkest and richest in caramel flavor.
Flavored rum is rum that has had spices and other flavoring agents added during the distillation process. Flavored rums are white rums that have flavors, sugars and coloring added. Flavors tend to lower ABV so these liquors are often less than 40% ABV. You'll find that many flavored rums have hints of the tropics - with flavors like banana, coconut, lime and mango.
