Product description

The rich and intense style of Jamaica and Barbados, with their notes of plum, banana and vanilla, is enhanced by meticulous blending and further maturation in Cognac, France. The result is a bold structure, spiced with notes of cinnamon and clove, and generous aromas of smoke and tropical fruit. An ideal companion for 'dark rum' cocktails, Plantation Original Dark is as equally at home with ice and ginger beer as it is in elaborate tiki classics like the Jungle Bird.

Best run for hurricanes without spending a fortune. It’s so good! Give this one a try for it’s flavorful and delicious without to much oak taste to it. Love it in my hurricane’s at home party!!

Not as dark a dark rum as say Goslings or Myers, but a very smooth flavor. Just enough molasses flavor to add the contrasting note.

I love a good Scotch, Whiskey and Bourbons. I haven’t been a rum drinker (except for a Mojito) and maybe Capt Morgan at a limited bar at a wedding. I needed a good dark flavor layered rum for a recipe, was on DRZY and this rum was an option. Do yourself a favor and BUY this! I opened it, poured a neat pour and let it open... warm it in your hand like a great brandy and prepare yourself for more rich Smokey flavors than you would believe! The rum is barrel aged in charred barrels, then hand selected by the Master Distiller and then SHIPPED to France to finish aging. It’s a rum. It’s not a scotch obviously. But if you have ever tried Balvenie 14 Caribbean Cask Aged, you will be reminded of some familiar notes. Cheers & happy drinking! Toni- Minneapolis

This rum is amazing. Lots of vanilla, some fruit, and warm spices like clove and cinnamon. Very smooth as well. No harsh bite like similarly priced rums I’ve tried. So far I’ve used it for tropical cocktails, sipping on the rocks, and straight up as a desert rum. Delicious in all three capacities. Super glad I took a risk on this bottle - it’s going to be my new go to. If you’re looking for a full, flavorful rum to round out your home bar, or a way to take your tiki drinks to the next level, your search is over.

It's not as good as the 5 year Barbados, and it's doesn't have the sheer strength of the OFTD, but it's better in tropical drinks than e.g. Coruba.

FAQs

Dark rum doesn't really have a definition. However, dark rum generally refers to rum that is brown in appearance thanks either aging, or the addition of molasses or caramel coloring. Dark rum is known to taste slightly more charred than other varieties, like white rum. That said, people often drink it neat or with over ice.
Dark rum goes great with a number of mixers, including ginger ale, orange juice, grapefruit juice and sodas like Coca-Cola. Dark rum has the heaviest, fullest body of any other variety of rum. It's rich in color, flavor and body - usually tasting of caramel and molasses. So, any beverage that could use a kick of caramel will be well suited to go with dark rum.
Also known as white rum, this is rum that has no color and a light flavor because its filtered multiple times and has a short aging period. It's often aged in steel tanks and is known for having a light body and sweet flavor. This is different than gold or dark rum which is aged in wooden casks and is notably more caramel tasting.
