All about ready-to-drink piña coladas

Ready-to-drink piña colada mix is the packaged version of the traditional cocktail. This rum-based, sweet drink contains coconut cream and pineapple juice and is served chilled. You can shake it or blend it with ice, depending on your preferences. Garnish it with a maraschino cherry, a pineapple wedge or both. While piña colada is a delicious cocktail in itself, you can mix it with other things to create variants. This cool, creamy cocktail pairs well with spicy seafood like fish or shrimp. This ready-to-drink fruit cocktail mix also goes well with a spicy barbecued chicken or chicken salad. Surprisingly, chefs even pour it over cakes to enhance the flavors.

History of piña colada

This syrupy, sweet cocktail was born in San Juan in Puerto Rico, where a bartender experimented with coconut cream, pineapple juice and rum. With the invention of this internationally-loved summer treat, the world was never the same. For the next 35 years, the bartender served this delicious drink in the hotel where he worked. In 1978, the piña colada became the official drink of Puerto Rico. Ever since, piña colada liquor mix has been popular. Though many people have tried to add a twist to the original recipe and come up with delicious blends, nothing beats the classic.

The magic of flavors

While most people add coconut cream, pineapple juice and rum, the original recipe by Caribe Hilton (where the frozen piña colada cocktail was invented) consists of white rum, coconut cream, heavy cream, pineapple juice and crushed ice. Served in a 12-ounce glass, it's fair to call it a delicious dessert in the guise of a cocktail. Some popular variants can be created by changing the quantities of the ingredients. To create the Malibu version, you can skip heavy cream and add lemon and syrup. Piña coladas are such a popular cocktail that July 10 is celebrated as National Piña Colada Day.
