Made in the Loire Valley since 1885, this is the leading brand of white crème de menthe in France. Still made by the same family, according to the original recipe using Mitcham peppery mint. First made by in the hot summer of 1885 by Emile Giffard, a dispensing chemist in Angers, France. Whilst working late one night a patron from the hotel next door arrived on his doorstep complaining of indigestion. She asked if Emile could concoct a drink from mint tablets. He ground the tablets into a fine powder, to which he added somespirit. The mixture cured her indigestion and left Emille with an idea. He set about formulating a clear peppermint liqueur using imported peppermint leaves from England, which he called 'Menthe Pastille'. He began to market his new liqueur, which proved an instant success, leading him to establish his own distillery. Menthe Pastille is still made to the original recipe at a distillery run by Bruno Giffard, Emile's great grandsonView all products by GiffardCalifornia Residents: Click here for Proposition 65 WARNING
