All about flavored brandy

What is flavored brandy?

Once you know exactly what you want in life, things usually get a lot easier. That can take years, we get it. If you keep your bar properly stocked with flavored brandy, though, your cocktail desires should become clearer. Flavored brandy is a blend of spirit and carefully selected flavors. Straddling the line between a sweeter liqueur and full-blown spirit, it comes in a bunch of varieties and it’s often strong enough to form the boozy base of your cocktail. It also brings along a signature flavor to pique your mixological creativity. You can drink it on the rocks or (more likely) blend it to perfection, but it’s good to have a variety of fruit brandies on hand in case a party breaks out.

Flavored brandy production

The base spirit for fruit brandy is, well, brandy. That’s distilled wine. This slightly floral, fruity spirit isn’t overwhelmingly assertive, so it helps support the selected flavoring without hogging too much attention. Brandy’s high alcohol content also makes it an excellent solvent, meaning it can efficiently extract flavors from fruits, herbs and coffee beans – whatever feels right! Many producers use a simple infusion method to get their flavorings, but separate flavors and extracts can go into the mix. You’ll have no problem finding all-natural versions, but artificial flavors and colors are possible. A lot of the best versions tend to focus on one additional flavor so they can showcase its quality.

What kinds of flavored brandy are there?

There are tons (perhaps literally) of flavors available for flavored brandy. Some of the favorites are coffee, ginger, vanilla and fruits like peaches, raspberries, and cherries.

How is flavored brandy different from schnapps?

The alcohol in schnapps derives from neutral grain spirits, as opposed to wine spirits. Schnapps also tends to be quite sweet in general. Flavored brandy can be sweet, but certainly doesn’t have to be.

Drinking flavored brandy

The most common home for flavored brandy is in cocktails, where you can add a fruity twist to your favorite spritzy drink. A daiquiri with peach brandy is heavenly. Add coffee brandy to your ice cream and you’ve got a gorgeous, boozy dessert.
