We exclusively age our eaux de vie in fine grained oak barrels, in order to enhance subtly the delicate fruity aromas of our spirits, crafted from Martell specific distillation method. When a barrel is called “Red”, a reference to the reddish color of aged wood, it has aged before other eaux-de-vie during at least 2 years up to 8 years, reaching the perfect stage of maturation for both the wood and the spirit. For Martell VSOP aged in Red Barrels, our cellar master selected only these very rare “red fine grained oak barrels” to age this cognac, highlighting Martell specific ageing style.View all products by MartellCalifornia Residents: Click here for Proposition 65 WARNING
I slightly hesitate to rate this cognac because it is too good. I don't want the price blown up or the quality pushed down by volume. But it deserves to be rated. It is a clear improvement over the previous Martell effort, which they labelled "Medallion." In my opinion, it is the best of the major four VSOPs (by which I mean Hennessy, Courvoisier, Martell, and Remy Martin). It's been a while, but it reminds me of Cordon Bleu. I hope, for what it's worth, that people will avoid referring to this product as "Red." Martell don't do so themselves, and there is too much marketing noise in the world already. It is Martell VSOP--that is what they call it themselves--and that should be a good enough name.
