Lagunitas India Pale Ale (IPA) adds quite the tropical component to the flavors that Lagunitas usually brings to the table. The nose has aspects of grapefruit, orange, and other citrus elements that balance out the strong scent of hops. These flavors are well known amongst other West Coast IPAs. The mouthfeel is crisp, moving from some malty sweetness on the mid palate to a dry hoppiness on the finish. But don’t worry -- it’s not so dry that it’ll make your mouth feel parched once you’ve finished that first sip. Some of that citrus still lingers in the aftertaste, making it a fully enjoyable experience to drink this IPA.View all products by Lagunitas
Lagunitas IPA is most certainly a classic example of the modern style of this age old beer...if that is a thing to say. It is a Northern California take on a beer style that has been made for centuries, or at least as long as England was sending beer to India via their trade routes in order to satisfy the thirsty men and women living abroad. It's a beer brewed with the spirit of the ancient, but the passion of the present.
The great thing about this particular IPA is the use of a touch of caramel malt barley which lends just a touch of sweetness to the body, rounding out the intensity of the American hops. Poured into a proper pint glass, the bubbly brew appears a honey orange topped with a light, white head that will dissipate just a touch as you hit it with your lips. The aroma wafts with bits of orange zest and punches of pine needles along with a hint of honey-like sweetness. The flavor is similar. Zippy citrus hops and crushed pine cones balanced with just a touch of sweetness from the malty backbone. The 6.2% abv is hardly noticeable as it drinks down smoothly and lusciously.
If you're looking for an easy drinking IPA, something that would appeal equally to your craft beer snob buddy and your lager loving uncle, Lagunitas IPA is an ideal choice. Pair a bottle with a gastropub style bleu cheese burger on a soft pretzel bun, a dozen or so teriyaki chicken wings, or a handful of sea salt and black pepper popcorn. Enjoy it with dinner, after dinner, in front of the television, out on the back porch, or at the park. It's good with everything.
