Drizly Expert Notes

Hoegaarden White is the beer that we picture in our mind's eye when discussing the Belgian-style wheat, or wit, beer. It is a beer that has been brewed for some 500 years and is still one of the best tasting in the world today. Soft and hazy and just the right amount of fruit and spice, it is no wonder it is a beer style that has been replicated by breweries world over. If we are to believe the stories, a small orphan boy by the name of Claes was found and raised in the brewery rich town of Hoegaarden all of those years ago, being taken care of by all of the townsfolk in turn. He would spend his days as a youth learning the secrets of each brewery, stealing the best of each until it was time for him to brew beer on his own. The rest, as it says, is history.

Hoegaarden is meant to be poured into it's namesake short, heavy, broad rimmed and panelled glassware that keeps the beer cool as it is enjoyed, allowing the huge aroma to swirl in front of your nose and lips. Brewed with a hefty amount of wheat and left unfiltered, the appearance is an extremely cloudy yellow, nearly asking to be called white. It is soft and delicate, murky and creamy. The beer is spiced with coriander and orange peel, the aroma allowing both of those ingredients to sing, combining with the elegant malts into a swirl of banana and white pepper. The flavor showcases a distinct flavor of coriander and island spice, orange zest, banana peels, and a hint of cereal grain and marshmallow.

The Belgian-wit is a truly unique flavor, so easy to enjoy. In fact, there seemed to be a moment in time when this was destined to be the best selling beer in the world if people didn't sway towards the much more bitter IPA for one reason or another. The freshness and ease of flavor makes it a favorite among beer lovers and beer novices alike. Give it a shot if you want to stray from your usual hefeweizen or saison. Pair it with fresh seafood, lobster mac & cheese, or heck, this is a perfect beer to enjoy over brunch in lieu of the classic mimosa. Just don't throw an orange slice on it. There is absolutely no need.
