Tall, dark and handsome. Some would describe Guinness Extra Stout as a strong beer, but it's actually, surprisingly, pretty light in alcohol and easy to drink. At 5.6% ABV, it's medium-bodied and balanced. With a roasted character and rounded flavors of bitterness and sweetness, this beer gives the drinker a cocoa flavor that would be reminiscent of a dark chocolate candy bar. Disntinctly black in color with a rich, creamy, cream-colored head of foam, it tastes so smooth on the tongue.
The history of Guinness Extra Stout is rich, based on a beer first brewed in 1821, when Arthus Guinness II set down precise instructions for brewing his "superior porter". It's actuall the precursor to every Guinness beer out there. It's made exclusively at the St. James's Gate brewery in Dublin, Ireland, and brewed with the highest quality malt, hops and Irish barley. Interestingly, Guinness was one of the first brewers to put labels on their beers! This ensure that bar owners couldn't try to pass off other porters or stouts as Guinness.
Guinness isn't just for St. Patrick's Day, stouts are actually great to pair with food! Because of the bold, rish flavors of the beer, it pairs very well with a steak, chili, hamburger or giant piece of chocolate cake. Yum! The Guinness Extra Stout is made for rounds with friends and does a great job at warming one up on a cold winter's day. You can taste the history in every sip, from the great emerald isle to your home. Slainte!
