Drizly Expert Notes

Green Flash Brewery's West Coast IPA is a paragon of this relatively modern and altogether ubiquitous style of beer, albeit truly a double IPA based on it's whopping 8.1% ABV. Based in the beer capital of the west coast, laid back San Diego, California, Green Flash is one of the longest standing breweries of this new era of craftsmanship and their brilliant attempt at capturing the zeal of the hop forward west coast IPA is pure beauty. This style of beer, which is what brought the IPA to prominence in America, is an aggressive variation of the English classic, contributing intense character through the use of herbaceous hops grown in the Pacific Northwest. Green Flash builds their example of the style with a menagerie of hops. Simcoe for tropical notes, Colombus for pungency, Centennial for pine, Citra for zest, and Cascade for it's floral quality.

The beer shines a copper, rusty orange with a billowing white head. Poured into a proper nonic pint glass, the aroma will overtake your senses within moments, but is strong enough to be noticed through just the small opening of the bottle. Notes of lemon zest, pot pourri, pine needles, resinous sappy bark, freshly trimmed grass, and a hint of malty sweetness overtake the region anywhere within the rim of the glass, inviting the hop lover in for a taste. It does not disappoint. Snappy, malty yet dry, big bodied and bold, the beer is a monster of flavors that mimic the aroma. Notes of redwood trees, dried lemon rinds, and resinous christmas wreaths, balanced with a slight caramel-like sweetness and a rounding hind of alcohol. This beer is everything that we want out of the style.

Green Flash West Coast IPA is the ideal beer for a gathering of friends who are trying to level up from the beer that they obsessed over in college. It has a bite and packs a punch, but an afternoon with a six pack and a couple of friends will leave you wanting more, wishing you had discovered this instant classic a few years earlier. Pair it with your dad's recipe for grilled hamburgers, sharp cheddar cheese along with your favorite crackers, or whatever pizza can be delivered the fastest.
