Product Description

Brewed by the Founders Brewing Company of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Founders Porter is the stuff that's part of dark beer lore. It's critically acclaimed across the board by drinkers, critics, and publications, making it the beverage of choice for dark beer drinkers. Using more chocolate malt than stouts or most porters, Founders Porter has a chocolatey, sweet goodness that's almost like candy in a glass. It's not necessarily like sticking an entire chocolate bar in your mouth, but drinkers of this libation probably aren't opposed to such a venture. It also has some hints of caramel for a balanced finish, and its smooth, velvety texture makes it feel like the beer of royalty. You can put on your crown if you don't mind the strange looks, or you can play the part for the evening to really sell yourself. When it comes to drinking Founders Porter, there's no set way. If you're a bottle drinker, you can still get the aroma and taste of the beer, but it's not as pronounced as when it's in a pint glass. When poured, it's perfect at room temperature, although it's still refreshing when served cold. At 6.5 ABV, it's also not too much alcohol to prevent you from having a few pints while watching the game or hanging out with friends. To top it off, it only has 45 IBUs, keeping you clear from the bitter beer face that so many dark beers cause even the biggest dark beer fans.

Drizly Expert Notes

Founders Porter is a 6.5% American Porter that is a must try for dark beer enthusiasts. Often touted as one of the best examples of the style, Founders Porter pours a silky black color with a fluffy creamy tan head. Founders Porter introduces the nose with chocolate and roasted malts on the aroma. This continues with medium roast coffee, shriveled raisin, roasted grains, a silky medium to medium plus mouthfeel, onto a sturdy bitterness (65 IBUs) to cut on any sweetness this beer carries from upfront.

Porters started off in English brewing tradition where both a porter and a slightly stronger stout would both be brewed out of one extraction of wort from the mash (the starting mixture of crushed grains and hot water steeped together). While a historic distinction may have existed, for general purposes, the term “stout" and “porter" has basically become undistinguishable in modern commercial examples.

Founders Brewing was founded in 1997 by Mike Stevens and Dave Engbers. Through years of trials and tribulations and financial struggles, Founders was on the brink of closing and bankruptcy by 2001. The two took a sharp shift in the focus in the brewery's portfolio and transitioned to brewing experimental beers that the brewers actually enjoyed, instead of focusing on what was perceived to be market demand. This proved to be critical in their success as Founders began being hyped for brewing some of the highest rated beers in the world, Kentucky Breakfast Stout (KBS) and Canadian Breakfast Stout (CBS). Since then, Founders has gone through a process of endless expansion, success, and acclaim from craft beer drinkers.
